[0:00:20] Christian Buckley Hello and welcome to another episode of the Collab Talk podcast. This show is dedicated to exploring how and why we collaborate whether one-on-one within small teams or across entire organizations. A lot of fascinating topics. I’m excited to get into the details of this one.
[0:00:39] Christian Buckley My guest today is an author and technologist and the founder and CEO of a process automation and development firm called Technology Rivers based in western Virginia. Ghazenfer, hello, welcome.
[0:00:54] Ghazenfer Mansoor Hello. Thanks Christian. It’s great to be on your show.
[0:01:00] Christian Buckley Well, it’s great to have you here. We’re going to talk about why tech projects fail and how to bring them back. Maybe we start with your background, your company, and your book.
[0:01:18] Ghazenfer Mansoor Yeah, absolutely. I originally grew up in Pakistan. I moved to the United States in 1999. I have a computer science degree. I started with COBOL and basic programming, then moved to Java.
[0:01:39] Ghazenfer Mansoor I worked with startups as an early engineer, then started consulting, built a recruitment software startup, and in 2015 I started Technology Rivers. We began as a mobile app development company and gradually moved into healthcare and AI-driven process automation.
[0:02:29] Ghazenfer Mansoor Mobile has always been a key focus. I started working on mobile in 2000, even before iPhone and Android. Later, I wrote my book Beyond the Download based on my experience building mobile apps.
[0:04:13] Christian Buckley You mention that 95% of apps fail in their first year. Why do they fail at such a high rate?
[0:04:38] Ghazenfer Mansoor Tech doesn’t fail because it’s complex. It fails because people don’t want to use it. It’s an adoption problem, not a feature problem. Many people focus too much on features instead of building something users love.
[0:05:25] Ghazenfer Mansoor: Don’t go after the feature race. Build something remarkable that people love to use.
[0:05:36] Christian Buckley That applies beyond tech as well. Focus is key.
[0:06:02] Ghazenfer Mansoor Absolutely. Successful businesses focus on one thing and do it well.
[0:07:32] Christian Buckley Are there warning signs that a project is starting to fail?
[0:07:50] Ghazenfer Mansoor There’s no single sign. There are many factors. In my book, I outline multiple strategies and reasons why projects fail.
[0:09:04] Christian Buckley Is it better to fail fast or try to recover?
[0:09:53] Ghazenfer Mansoor: Fail fast, learn, and move on. Like marketing, you need experimentation, tracking, and adapting based on user behavior.
[0:11:00] Christian Buckley How do companies struggle with making that decision?
[0:11:19] Ghazenfer Mansoor Many projects fail due to poor direction. Even strong teams can build the wrong thing if leadership provides the wrong guidance.
[0:12:56] Christian Buckley So product-market fit is critical?
[0:13:09] Ghazenfer Mansoor Yes, it’s a combination of product, execution, and leadership. Identifying issues early is key.
[0:13:47] Ghazenfer Mansoor Launch with a smaller audience first. Fix issues before scaling.
[0:14:53] Christian Buckley You emphasize retention over acquisition. Why?
[0:14:59] Ghazenfer Mansoor Many focus only on acquisition. But if churn is high, you lose users quickly. Retention and engagement are critical for long-term success.
[0:15:32] Christian Buckley What about feedback loops?
[0:15:39] Ghazenfer Mansoor Feedback is essential, but it must be structured properly. Product owners must connect insights from sales, support, and users.
[0:17:57] Ghazenfer Mansoor It’s important to be proactive. Don’t wait for users to complain—identify issues early.
[0:18:14] Christian Buckley How does AI and automation fit into development processes?
[0:18:47] Ghazenfer Mansoor Building the right way must be part of the process. Some clients want deep technical involvement, others focus only on outcomes.
[0:19:29] Ghazenfer Mansoor We implement strong DevOps practices, automation, and AI-driven development to ensure efficiency and scalability.
[0:20:20] Ghazenfer Mansoor One test I use is giving the code to a new developer and asking them to run it without help. If they can, the system is well-documented and structured.
[0:21:14] Christian Buckley When rescuing projects, do you follow a checklist?
[0:21:53] Ghazenfer Mansoor Not a fixed checklist. Each problem is different. We isolate the system, understand the architecture, and fix issues step by step.
[0:23:48] Ghazenfer Mansoor It’s like fixing a house while people are still living in it—you can’t shut everything down.
[0:24:55] Ghazenfer Mansoor Sometimes small fixes can dramatically improve performance.
[0:26:02] Ghazenfer Mansoor Rewriting isn’t always the answer. Often it’s better to fix and iterate rather than rebuild from scratch.
[0:27:46] Ghazenfer Mansoor Incremental improvements allow faster feedback and reduce risk.
[0:29:03] Christian Buckley Agile and iterative development leads to better outcomes.
[0:30:49] Ghazenfer Mansoor Short iterations help refine decisions and improve product alignment with business needs.
[0:31:48] Christian Buckley How do you keep client teams motivated?
[0:32:15] Ghazenfer Mansoor We support clients continuously. Our job doesn’t end at delivery—we help them evolve and improve the product.
[0:33:00] Christian Buckley Do you see misalignment between leadership and teams?
[0:33:14] Ghazenfer Mansoor Yes, it’s common. Leadership may have a vision, but teams may have different experiences or constraints.
[0:34:05] Ghazenfer Mansoor We work in a fast-paced, startup-like environment and help align teams with practical solutions.
[0:35:15] Ghazenfer Mansoor Sometimes hard decisions are required due to time or cost constraints.
[0:36:44] Christian Buckley What growth strategies are often neglected?
[0:36:56] Ghazenfer Mansoor Tracking is key. If you can’t measure, you can’t improve. Understanding user behavior helps identify drop-off points and improve engagement.
[0:38:10] Christian Buckley Will AI change why projects fail?
[0:38:44] Ghazenfer Mansoor AI is changing things, but fundamentals remain. Misunderstanding AI is a major issue. Generative AI is just one part—true AI involves training models and leveraging data effectively.
[0:40:31] Ghazenfer Mansoor Success with AI depends on asking the right questions and clearly defining problems.
[0:41:34] Christian Buckley AI requires better thinking and communication.
[0:41:49] Christian Buckley It’s an exciting time. It will be interesting to revisit this topic in the future.
[0:42:47] Ghazenfer Mansoor Yes, fundamentals remain, but the tools evolve.
[0:43:08] Christian Buckley Thank you for your time.
[0:43:21] Ghazenfer Mansoor Thanks for having me.
